James P. McDermott Collection

In May, SCBS received the donation of the professional library of the late Prof. James P. McDermott, Department of Religious Studies, Canisius College. The collection, which is particularly strong in Pali materials, will be housed in the SCBS reading rooms and made available to all members of the Stanford community.

Prof. McDermott, author of Development in the Early Buddhist Concept of Kamma/Karma (1984) and other important studies, was well known for his work on South Asian Buddhism. A graduate of Princeton, he joined the faculty of Canisius in 1977. He served for many years as chair of Religious Studies and was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at his untimely death in 2002.

Our thanks to the family of Prof. McDermott,
and to Prof. Christopher Lee, Canisius College,
for facilitating the gift.
