Opening Symposium:

Finding the Way: A Introductory Symposium on Taoism
Saturday, February 24, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Followed by a Reception in the Trustees' Auditorium

This half-day symposium provides an introduction to Taoist arts, philosophy, religion, and the cultural milieu in which Taoism emerged, with one lecture focusing on the objects seen in the exhibition.

David Johnson, UC Berkeley, focuses on Taoist philosophy and Taoism as a popular religion.
Lewis Lancaster, UC Berkeley, discusses the cross-fertilization of Buddhism and Taoism.
Suzanne Cahill explores images of women in Taoism.
Stephen Little, exhibition curator, Art Institute of Chicago, introduces the Taoist arts of China.

Closing Symposium:

Showing the Way: Historical Representations on the Tao
Sunday, April 29, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Followed by a Reception in the Trustees' Auditorium

This half-day symposium provides a more in-depth exploration of Taoist subjects.

Stephen Little, exhibition curator, Art Institute of Chicago, will discuss "Taoism at the Ming Court: Evidence from a Painted Scroll."
Franciscus Verellen, Ecole française d'extrême-orient, will speak on "Taoist Graphic Designs: Aids to Visualization and Magic Symbols."
Steve Bokenkamp, Indiana University, will present "Taoism and Family."
Judith Boltz, University of Washington, will take up the subject "On the place[ment] of something Taoist in Chinese works of art."
