News of the site. Once again, we seem to have failed in our promise to update the site on a regular basis. To those of you who have visited us over the past year in vain hope of finding new material, our apologies. Apart from our standard excuse of the preoccupations of academe (with both of us serving as department chairs), we held off on a major site update as we discussed website policies with our Editorial Board. We had hoped to gain permission to upload a substantial body of additional material for public access, but at this point, we remain restricted to selected project translations previously appearing in print. Following this policy, we have put up the three new chapters of the Shôbôgenzô that were published in Dharma Eye over the past year and a half: Stanley Weinstein's translation of "Getting the Marrow by Doing Obeisance" (Raihai tokuzui), from issue number 10 (Spring 2002); Will Bodiford's version of "Not Doing Evils" (shoaku makusa), from number 11 (Autumn 2002); and Carl's "Penetration of Other Minds" (Tashin tsû), from issue 12 (Spring 2003). We've also added Carl's translation of "Old Buddha Mind" (Kobutsu shin), scheduled at this writing to appear in Dharma Eye 13 (Autumn 2003). Finally, in our Archive, we've added an article on the history and purpose of SZTP by Professor Nara Yoshiaki, Chair of our Editorial Board. The piece originally appeared in Dharma Eye 9 (Autumn 2001), a special issue on the project that includes reflections by several authors on the joys of translating Dogen. Status report. At the annual Editorial Board meeting in Tokyo last summer, we submitted ten new Shôbôgenzô translations for review. With these, we now have roughly half the 75-chapter redaction of the work in drafts. You can see which chapters we've been working on by checking the Shôbôgenzô Contents page. Also at the Board meeting, a target date of 2005 was set for publication of Griff's translation of the Standards for Soto School Practice (Sôtôshû gyôji kihan), the manual of Soto school rituals. To cut costs and increase accessibility, we're aiming at an online publication, rather than a printed book. In a shift of assignments, Will Bodiford was asked to begin work on translation of the Denkôroku, the important history of the masters of the Soto lineage by Keizan, founder of the Sôjiji branch of Soto. With Will thus otherwise occupied, Griff was added to our Shôbôgenzô team, to work especially on chapters related to monastic practice. We hope to put one of his translations in Dharma Eye in the near future. Following the Tokyo meeting, Carl, Griff, and Stan held our second Shôbôgenzô translators workshop at the Stanford Center for Buddhist Studies, where we spent three days going over one of the chapters and discussing issues in and best practices for translation and annotation. All of us have found these workshops remarkably helpful (and enjoyable), and we hope to convene another at Yale next summer. Our thanks to Stanford's Center for East Asian Studies, which provided funding for Stanford graduate student Sarah Fremerman to continue on as research assistant for the project over the past year. Sarah is compiling our glossary data base for use by the translators and eventually for uploading to this site. This page.
